CIVIL WAR WELTY GRAVESTONE DEDICATION

The Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War from Kinsman Camp No. 23 out of Atlantic will be dedicating the gravestone of Civil War Veteran Samuel H. Welty at the Layton Township Cemetery on July 31, 2021.   The dedication will take place immediately after Walnut’s 150th parade.  The public is invited and encouraged to attend this historical dedication at the Layton Cemetery.

Samuel H. Welty was born on October 6, 1837 in Hagerstown, Maryland. He was the second of at least 13 children born to parents Christian S. Welty and Catharine.

In the late 1850’s, Samuel Welty was married to Mary E. Titus. In 1860, they had one son Eugene, 1, and were farming by Polo, Illinois. On August 19, 1862, Samuel enlisted in the 92nd Illinois Infantry, Company D. Private Welty fought in a number of campaigns until he was mustered out March 6th, 1863 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Samuel and Mary had a second son, Frank. Mary is buried in the Lewis Cemetery.

Samuel Welty married Frances Delnora Bowman Constable in 1883. By 1890 they were living in Walnut. Samuel died on August 13, 1907 in Walnut.

The Walnut Genealogy Society applied for, received, and set the military tombstone for Samuel, who is buried here with his parents.

Samuel H. Welty and his descendants were featured in Antique City Roots in the April 2017 and July 2018 issues.
