Free Access to Iowa Online Newspapers

BY BARBARA BUTCHER

The online collection of newspapers made available by Advantage Archives (formerly Advantage Preservation) company continues to grow.  Advantage Archives has contracted with several hundred libraries and other institutions across the United States to digitize and host their online newspaper collections.  The March 18, 2019 update totals 598 collections from forty-one states and a total number of pages exceeding sixty million.

Here is a list from Iowa of the online collections available for free.  (Other states are also listed and accessible there.)  Page count is in parentheses.  Following information from “The Ancestor Hunt” website at http://www.theancestorhunt.com/ .  Once on their Home Page, look for and click on the article “60 Million Historic U.S. Newspaper Pages Now Available From Advantage Archives.”  Then a click on the provider will take you to that area’s website where you can quickly see what towns and publications are included.
