By WGS Corresponding Secretary Karen Hansen
After reading the Hansen genealogy in our last newsletter, Allen Ohrt of ND contacted Jim Hansen to see if his Hansen’s were related. We referred him to Phyllis and Dick Sievers. Allen e-mailed copies of postcards from some of their relatives. He also e-mailed photos of the Walnut main street business block, a parade and a gathering of people.
Renee Pence of WY was sent a short obituary of Mary Lamer. We knew from her tombstone that she died in 1904.
Angela Beckstead of AZ was sent articles about fire destroying the Smith house and the moving of a house onto the Walter Rieck farm. It was moved from west of the current Catholic church in 2 sections to get through a bridge.
Janice Kazmerzak of IA was sent the obituaries of Terrance and Mary Waters.
Research is being done on the Mullen and Heckman families who attended St. Patrick Church in Walnut. Some of the names being researched are Belle Heckman, Matthias Mullen, Michael & Mary Hogan Mullen and related families. Some information has been located in the old church records plus some obituaries have been found.
We are working with Jack Engleman of IL in researching the Engleman family. He has provided history on Solomon and Jemima, who are buried in the Lincoln Township Cemetery. We have located census records, obituaries, a photo, and information found on the internet.
Dr. Mark Reimer, Director of Music at Christopher Newport University in VA, would like all of the information that we can find on the old Walnut bands.
