An iconic cottonwood tree on the Calvary Baptist Church lot in Walnut was cut down on January 29, 2025. According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, it was the third largest in the state. KETV in Omaha reported on the event. Walnut Mayor Brett Simpson said it was cut down over concerns the tree might fall on property or on a person.
Memories of the town’s large cottonwood tree will live on through photographs.
