From the President’s Pen

You know the busy summer is upon you when you pass yourself coming in when you’re headed out the door!

In my life, week before last took me to the rainy tropics of Florida.  This next week is going to be taking me to the majestic mountains of Colorado.  The week following, I’ll be with over 600 Sr. High campers at bible camp in Clear Lake, Iowa.

And before the summer is over, my family is suppose to join me for a road trip back to my roots in historic Massachusetts.

Oh, and there should be another trip to Colorado in the works to squeeze in before too long.

Do you think your life is busy?

It is at time like this that my hat goes off to people like WGS members Jim and Karen Hansen.

Every article in this month’s newsletter comes from their research and compiling and typing.

I know I would not have had the time to gather all these articles myself, let alone some other subject to fill the newsletter.

When we knew the Walnut Volunteer Fire Department would be celebrating their 125th anniversary this month, it was decided to dedicate the newsletter to the long history of this all important entity in our community.

And with Jim being a part of the WGS and the Fire Department, who better should the responsibility fall on than he and his wife Karen?

Research began many months ago with countless hours of searching through the hand written minutes of the City of Walnut and of the Fire Department.

I don’t know which Jim enjoyed more:  searching through the old records or being able to hand his findings over to Karen to type up!  (Jim only types using two fingers.  Not that there is anything wrong with that—that happens to be my skill, too.)

Again, I give the credit where it is due.  Thank you Jim and Karen for the contents of this newsletter.  I believer the readers with not only find it interesting reading about small-town life, but that might also learn something new about Walnut.  I know I did.

Well, with my busy summer extending into a busy fall, who will be the next to step up to the plate and provide some good reading for our October newsletter.  It is time to begin thinking about it, you know.          -PWH
